What kind of dimensions should the images be?

Let me know what you think. If you have something else in mind, I can change it to whatever you'd like.

EDIT: Actually, let me try something first.

Also, any thoughts on Hearts vs. Triforce vs. Anything else?

The word art in the new banner you have provided looks slightly better. I don't mean to be picky here, but it feels like the text (or maybe more the bubble behind it) feels like it's competing with the banner image. If you could position the text in a more neutral position, I think you'll be able to balance the banner out.
My recommendation is to move the text over to the bottom left, and to remove the yellow bubble. Give that a try and see if it works better.

I agree about the "Legend of Zelda", but the image I took was only 804 pixels wide, so there isn't much room for movement. With 80 pixels as the maximum height, it's difficult to find something that works.
I also agree that the titles are mostly for "here are some titles". It just looked... empty. And I couldn't think of what to put there.
I'll try your suggestion, though, and post it soon.

I noticed something about these headers while browsing my blog - the headers are also visible within the topics themselves. That said, it would be a good idea not to make a header with bright and/or annoying colours - they'll distract readers from the first post of the page =P

Here's with your initial idea:
Here's it darker:
I don't really like it darker, now that I look at it.
Otherwise, I can try to find another picture, I guess, but since this is the most recent "new" Zelda, I thought it would be cool.

Once you're done, show me what you did, because I'm still pretty new at making things look better than just decent (I'm used to MS Paint with tiny bits of Photoshop and MS Photo Editor).

The main thing that Photoshop has over Paint in terms of fonts is the anti-aliasing, and a couple of the fonts included look pretty nice (though I'm no expert) You can fiddle with the colors if you want (I didn't really like the yellow blob behind the title) I used Adobe Garamond Pro if you want to use the same font.
I don't really like the word shapes much to begin with, but they really don't fit The Legend of Zelda
And now that I look at it the font color looks terrible, so you should change it
