Nintendo have published a message from the designers of the new Super Smash Bros. games for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. As previously reported, the game is being developed by Namco Bandai in collaboration with Smash Bros. co-creator, Masahiro Sakurai.

Sakurai will be directing the game as always, and overseeing the project. His message follows.

Sakurai’s message:

Hello, I’m Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the Super Smash Bros. series.

It’s my personal belief that the only time a creative product really resonates is in that first moment when it’s actually in front of you.

With that said, I’ve realised that if we keep the new Super Smash Bros. title’s development structure secret, it’ll only create more and more speculation, and I won’t be able to develop the game with any freedom. That’s why I’ve decided to announce this news right now, even though it’s still very early on.

I would love to provide more information, but for now, I’m going to stay quiet until I have something solid to show you.

The project has just gotten started. Bear in mind that not only are we developing two titles simultaneously, but we announced the project before we even started actual development, so I’m afraid we will likely have to keep you waiting for quite a while. Please be patient.

Currently, the prototype prepared by NAMCO BANDAI Games and NAMCO BANDAI Studio’s special team looks pretty good, and it’s working great. In order to take advantage of the fact that there will be versions for two different systems, and to maximise and offer fun new gameplay elements, the entire team is going to work hard together. Thank you.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS And Wii U Being Developed By Tales, Soulcalibur, Tekken Staff

And now, the second message, which is from Masaya Kobayashi of Namco Bandai games, who are developing the new Smash Bros. game.

Kobayashi’s message:

Hello, everyone. I’m Masaya Kobayashi of NAMCO BANDAI Studio. I’m so honored to be able to join the Super Smash Bros. team – that globally popular series of which Japan is particularly proud – and to work alongside Mr. Sakurai.

In order to make Mr. Sakurai proud, we will take on this project with NAMCO BANDAI’s best staff! Yoshito Higuchi, the producer and the director of the “Tales” series, Tetsuya Akatsuka, producer and director of “Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs.,” the art director/sound director of the “SoulCalibur” series, the main development team staff from the “TEKKEN” series…and that’s just for starters.

All the top creators from NAMCO BANDAI are gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project.

We will fully utilise our experience and knowledge in action/fighting game development, technical capability, and organisational strength, and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful “Super Smash Bros.” titles ever! Don’t miss them!

Lloyd and Luke playable perhaps? Sounds good to me.

I could see one or the other. Not sure about both. I'd like both, but they do play kind of similarly.

Was not expecting this, but considering that Tales and SSB have a similar battle system, I'm looking forward to the end results.

Over at Namco-Bandai, the producer of Tales of Symphonia, Makoto Yoshizumi, has been quoted saying he would love for a Tales character to show up in the newest Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and Wii U.
“Maybe if we beg Sakurai-san, it will happen! I know Higuchi-san would love it, but the decision is Sakurai-san’s. I think it’s still too early to talk about it.”
“We need to keep in mind that a character can only appear in a Smash Bros game if he already appeared on a Nintendo console.”

I’ve never played a Tales of Symphonia game before, and I don’t really know a lot about the series, but I’ve heard good things, and a quick look at IGN shows a pretty promising look at a cast of characters to choose from. For those of you who’ve played it, which character or two would you like to be able to fight as in the new Smash Bros.? Do you even think think they should be included at all?

I'd like to see Luke rather than Lloyd...but I'll take anyone.

Luke's on 3DS, so that's a good possibility. Maybe even better than having Lloyd on there. Who knows? I'd certainly like either one (though, like Jade, I'd prefer post-haircut Luke).

News of the next entry in the hit Super Smash Bros. series has been slow since it began development earlier this year. But today, a user by the name of “Halibuton” has appeared on GameFAQs, claiming to work in Namco’s PR firm. His thread shares with us a slew of details on the upcoming game that he claims to have heard here and there throughout his work. It should be noted that there is no way to verify the legitimacy of this source, and these rumors should be taken as nothing more. Prepare a truckload of salt before reading this, because you’re going to need more than a few grains.

A Nintendo Direct feed is coming on January 31st, the anniversary of Brawl‘s JP release.
Little Mac and Takamaru were two of the first newcomers chosen, representing the East and the West.
K. Rool will be playable, featuring a redesign of the character put forth by Retro Studios. (Could a new Donkey Kong Country be on the way?)
Ridley will be playable, featuring his “evolution” from Other M. He and K. Rool were chosen due to high demand.
Shulk, Ghirahim, and Dillon (Dillon’s Rolling Western) are planned to be included in the roster, but these decisions are not finalized
Platinum Games wants to include a character, but no decisions have been made yet. Characters from The Wonderful 101 look more likely than Bayonetta.
A new Yoshi character to be introduced will be playable, likely to originate from Yoshi Land Wii U.
Starship Mario, Pushmo Park, Cookie Country (Kirby’s Return to Dream Land), and Giant Chasm (Pokémon Black and White Versions 2) will all be featured stages.

This “leak” follows the usual formula: Include one or two small surprises, but keep everything completely believable. Nothing in here really stands out as too much of a stretch from reality, lending a hand to its believability. However, information like this is just as easy to fake as it is to hear, so don’t expect anything just yet. We’ll have to wait for some more official news before anything this guy says can be trusted.

Very skeptical at this point, but I have been begging for Ridley since the first game...

Oh my word. I think my favorite thing is how the internet has unanimously decided that the villager is a Patrick Bateman-esque complete monster psychopath. Look at that smile...its just not right.
