This week’s Famitsu magazine reportedly reveals Shin Megami Tensei IV in development for the Nintendo 3DS, according to Japanese retail blog, Sinobi, who reported the news via Twitter this evening. Just to be safe, we’re marking this a rumour for now.

The last title Atlus developed under the “Shin Megami Tensei” moniker—ie; not a spin-off or associated series like Persona or Devil Survivor—was Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (pictured), a first-person dungeon crawler, for the Nintendo DS.

We don’t know yet what kind of game Shin Megami Tensei IV will be, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more news, which should be coming soon enough—Sinobi says that the official site for Shin Megami Tensei IV will go live tomorrow at this URL.

Sounds like a great score for the 3DS!

Maybe. I'm not really a fan of the games under the monkier, but it could be cool. I'm just not really a fan of menu-based games, so as long as it's something cool I'll think about getting it.

Excellent excellent news!! I really hope they go more of a 3rd person perspective rather than the first person view in SMT1 and 2.

So is this different from Persona 4? The series' bonkers naming confuses me constantly.

QEdit: The article says it's different, guess I should learn how to read. Interested but I like the Persona series a lot better. Wish it were just a port of the Persona 4 Vita game or P3P honestly.

Yeah I've seen some straight Megaten before but something about the style just doesn't appeal to me. And then there's the problem of the steep difficulty curve and archaic design decisions. Persona 3 & 4 have some of those design quirks as well though, so I'll see if this is worth it.

That is, if they bother getting it to Europe at all. The last game Atlus published here probably dates around 2009. :Sigh:

I love the Persona series a lot as well. I wish we could get a taste here on the 3DS, im sure they could do it. Its hard to find P4, and I'm not about to buy a Vita just for it.

Awesome, now I have a reason not to sell my 3DS. This and Theatrhythm is all I'm waiting for right now.

I saw a really nice looking copy of P4 at my local gamestop the day I bought P3F. I would've picked it up but it was $40 used so...
I don't really plan on picking up a Vita anytime soon, but if I do it'll be for that game. Then again, I'll probably just get the PS2 version anyway... and pick up P4 Golden sometime later.

According to the Atlus newsletter I got, if you register both this and Fire Emblem: Awakening at Club Nintendo, you get $30 in E-Shop credit:

Might be worth checking out, especially if you were planning to have both games anyway.

I'll probably take part in this offer, especially since physical copies count. Then I'll use that credit for Ace Attorney 5 since it's dl only (sucks).
